OTTAWA, ON, Nov. 6, 2026 /CNW/ -- In response to the release of the federal government's 2026 budget, Masters of Our Destiny, Climate Proof Canada issued the following statement:
"Budget 2026 misses a critical opportunity to strengthen Canada's economic resilience to extreme weather at a time when climate-related disasters are imposing growing costs on households, businesses and governments.
Canada cannot build a stronger economy while disaster losses continue to climb. These losses are disrupting businesses, damaging critical infrastructure, worsening housing affordability pressures, straining public finances and reducing economic productivity. Investing in protecting Canadians from climate risk is not optional. It is fundamental to achieving the government's goals of affordability, opportunity and long-term economic growth. Climate resilience is economic resilience.
Climate Proof Canada welcomes several positive investments in the 2026 budget, including investments in emergency management for First Nations communities. However, these investments do not reflect the scale of action needed to address one of Canada's fastest-growing economic risks.
Climate Proof Canada urges the federal government to adopt a whole-of-society approach, working with provinces, municipalities, Indigenous communities and the private sector to implement an ambitious climate economic resilience agenda focused on protecting Canadians, homes, infrastructure and the economy.
Specifically, the federal government should prioritize these three areas:
- Renew and prioritize federal funding for the National Adaptation Strategy.
- Invest in dedicated climate resilient infrastructure funding within the Build Communities Strong Fund Direct Delivery Stream.
- Ensure federally supported housing is not built in areas at high-risk of flooding or wildfire, and improve the resilience of new homes through federal building code updates."
